‘You say the magic’s gone – well, I’m not a magician.
You say the spark’s gone – well, get an electrician’

Feeling a bit jaded? Fallen out of love with that job you were so happy to get? Careers are like relationships: you have to maintain them. Following on from my last post, ‘Am I the average of five?’, I’ve been thinking about what happens when we take things for granted.
In life, most people would acknowledge that it’s important to show our partners, our family and our friends that we’re prepared to put in the effort to make those relationships work well. If we’re always waiting for a friend to call and invite us to lunch or always expecting our partner to smarten up and woo us without us ever returning the favour, we’re in danger of damaging those relationships through lack of action. We’re quitting our responsibilities.
The same could be said for our careers. You did everything you could to be hired in the first place, then worked your socks off to prove your employer made the right choice, relentlessly pursued opportunities to shine and for a while, everything’s great. Then one day, you notice that you’re less excited by the prospect of going to work on Monday. You know exactly what your boss wants and you deliver that. Just that. Nothing more. Where did the spark go?
That spark isn’t externally generated, it’s an internal thing: if it’s gone out, it’s our responsibility to reignite it. Here are some questions that might help you decide what you need to do to bring the spark back.
- Am I operating at my best in this situation?
- If not, am I ready to take responsibility to change that?
- When I’m operating at my best, what will I be doing?
- How might that change the situation?
- Will that change reignite my spark?
- If it doesn’t, what are my next steps?
They’re big questions but your career is a big deal. If you’d like to consider them with someone impartial, why not email me to see how we can work together to reignite that spark?
Today’s pebble for you to consider: has the spark gone out of your work? If so, what are you going to do this week to get it back?
What do you think?
