According to the Daily Telegraph, the UN has appointed a Malaysian astrophysicist, Mazlan Othman, as its Ambassador to Aliens. Before I read this, I had absolutely no idea that the UN had such a thing as an Office for Outer Space Affairs – I suspect you didn’t either. Having said that, I can think of at least one person I know who’s probably sending them his CV right now!
I don’t know quite what to think about the fact that there are plans to have an office which will act as the first point of contact for any alien visitors. Popular science fiction suggests that alien encounters might not be entirely peaceful so I guess it’s as well to be prepared for every eventuality!
So lets take a light-hearted look at this issue for today’s pebble:
If you were appointed Ambassador to Aliens, what three things would you want them to know about Earth?
I guess I’d:
encourage them to phone home;
ask them why they’d chosen Earth for a visit;
and as a coach, I’d probably ask them: ‘on a scale of 1 to 10, how are you feeling about meeting the Earthlings?’!
What do you think?
